The PGA TOUR is back, and it was an exciting week. A playoff between Collin Morikawa and Daniel Berger, with Berger taking home the trophy. But the tournament was also special because of other high profile golfers after the 3-month break.
Collin Morikawa, the young 23-year-old from Los Angeles showed what the golfing world has in store, as he went 64-67-67-67 to force a playoff with Daniel Berger. He lipped out his putt on the first playoff hole to give Berger the win, but he proved that he truly has something special. In his short career, he has made 21 cuts in 22 tournaments. Comparably, Tiger had only made 13 cuts through the same period. Not a bad start!
Daniel Berger came back with a solid 4-under 66 on Sunday to secure a spot in the playoff Sunday. Even though he did get quite lucky with Morikawa’s bad break on the first playoff hole, he definitely deserved his win, with only 5 bogeys all week.
Xander Schauffele shot a 1-under 69 after holding the 54-hole lead, which dropped him to T3 for the tournament. However, the 26-year-old from La Jolla, California showed he can still compete. Still in search of his first major, he has had many close calls, including second-place finishes at the Masters, the Open, the Players, and the WGC-HSBC Championship. Potentially, there still is a lot in store for Xander, and he will definitely continue to be a threat to everyone out there.
Jordan Spieth, the Wonder Boy, seemed to make his long-awaited comeback Saturday, briefly holding the lead. He finished T10, but he was proud of how he dealt with the ups and downs, like his 4-putt double bogey on Friday (he made back-to-back birdies to finish with a 5-under 65) and a comeback from a 3-bogey stretch Sunday, where he made 3 birdies in a row to get back to within two shots of the lead.
Current world number 1 Rory McIlroy shot a 7-under 63 on Friday and also seemed to be playing very well, but finished the week with a 4-over 74 to finish at -6, T32 overall. Former world number 1 Brooks Koepka was not at the top of his game, but managed to stay under par for all four of his rounds (68-68-69-69) to finish -6 as well.
The Charles Schwab Challenge was a great comeback to the tour with an exciting finish, and all fans will be looking forward to the RBC Heritage at Harbor Head next week.
