After Bill Belichick and the New England Patriots signed former Carolina QB and MVP Cam Newton, I believe that they will be the best team in the NFL, with a 13-3 record and a Super Bowl ring.
Looking back on Cam Newton’s MVP season where he led the Panthers to a 15-1 record and a Super Bowl appearance, they had a less than stellar offense around Cam, and a defensive-minded head coach. However, Cam Newton found a way to balance running and passing better than any scrambling QB at that time.
He doesn’t run too much where it gets to a point that he gets injured because of it, but he also doesn’t sit back in the pocket for the entire game. He has been injured, but not because of scrambling.
Next, we look at his arm talent, which was above-average. However, due to injuries, it should regress a little bit. Worst case scenario, Newton slightly underperforms in the passing game.
However, Tom Brady is a pretty similar talent, who fell into the hands of the best HC of all time, and a perfect scheme. Injuries should not be people’s main concern with Cam, but instead his discipline.
However, I don’t think that the Patriots, who have been known to run a tight ship, will have a problem disciplining him. In Cam’s MVP year, he had Lamar-like numbers, with 35 Passing TD to Lamar’s 36, and 400 more yards in the air. However, he threw 10 picks to Lamar’s 6.
Lamar had double the amount of rushing yards, however, he did it more often and had significantly less TD.
The Patriots lost big names like Kyle Van Noy and Jamie Collins, and of course Tom Brady, but I think they found a replacement who will have a better season than Tom Brady’s last two.
Not to mention, Bill Belichick never fails to develop his young talent, and he will find a scheme to maximize the potential of his defense as he has in the past. Their losses will have minimal impact, and they improved on the offensive side of the ball by getting Cam Newton.
