Before you freak out, relax…
Doug Flutie was not human and was the only Heisman winner in program history. He brought an influx of students to the already growing school and changed the athletic program completely. No one will ever forget his famed “Hail Flutie” against Miami.
Then there’s Matt Ryan. “Matty Ice” brought the fun back to Chestnut Hill, Massachusetts. The “Chestnut Thrill” slogan was born under his reign. Every college football fan remembers the Eagles comeback against the Virginia Tech Hokies like it was yesterday.
However, something those two legendary QB’s didn’t have while they were at BC was NFL experience.
Hafley’s crew gives the Eagles so many new ideas and plays to work with with all of their experience. Five out of eleven of Hafley’s assistants have NFL experience and ten out of eleven have been on a coaching staff at a Power 5 school.
Eagles new offensive coordinator, Frank Cignetti, when asked about how he will run the BC offense next season, said, “What we both believe in and what we’ve talked about is blending the best of the National Football League with the best of college football and high school football.”
Hafley and his assistants are going to use unique and innovative methods in order to really jump start this program only two years after being ranked as highly as 17th in the country. Hafley has brought in experienced and elite staff to help make up for the struggling recruiting for BC football.
Hafley is highly analytical and is very comparable to L.A. Rams head coach Sean McVay who jump started that franchise.
Hafley himself has been involved in the past with the University of Pittsburgh, Tampa Bay Buccaneers, Cleveland Browns, San Francisco 49ers, and the Ohio State Buckeyes. He molded Chase Young and Jeff Okudah into top 10 NFL Draft choices.
He was also the head of the top defense in all of college football last year, according to NCAA.com.
So BC fans, continue to wear your Flutie and Ryan jerseys, but watch out for Hafley as he may steal your hearts next fall.
