IT’S OFFICIAL! Carson Wentz has been traded to his ideal trade destination—the Indianapolis Colts—for a 2021 3rd round pick and 2022 conditional 2nd round pick. The 2nd round pick can become a 1st round pick if Carson Wentz plays at least 75% of Indy’s snaps next year OR 70% of the snaps IF the Colts make the playoffs.
Now that Carson Wentz has been traded, none of the 22 QBs drafted in the 1st round between 2009-2016 draft classes are with their original teams.
What’s next? One of two things: Jalen Hurts will take the keys to this franchise, or the Eagles will select their next franchise QB this year. Personally, I’d prefer Zach Wilson or Trey Lance over Jalen Hurts, but I understand keeping Jalen Hurts for the time being.
As for the Eagles, they will eat a $33.8M dead cap hit, the largest in NFL history, and went from originally wanting a “Matthew Stafford-like deal” to accepting this trade…which was much less than that.
Wentz reportedly was in communication with everyone in the organization except GM Howie Roseman, who appeared to be the last person in power Wentz had tension with. Now, he gets a fresh start with a place where he wants to go, and a place where he feels wanted. He has the opportunity to resurrect his career, and relive the MVP-caliber play the entire NFL got to witness back in 2017, when the Eagles won the Super Bowl.
The Colts get a player they’ve been linked to for an entire season now, who can take over their franchise for at least the mid-term of their franchise. It’s a low-risk, high-reward move for a well-built, playoff caliber team that’s a legitimate Super Bowl contender now. They get a franchise-caliber QB, who showed Patrick Mahomes-like ability in 2017, when he was essentially the MVP of the league prior to a devastating torn ACL.
It’s officially the end of an era. Doug Pederson is out, Carson Wentz is out, and new leadership (with the exception of Howie Roseman) is in the building. It’s officially time for a fresh start, for all parties, for the fanbase, the franchise, and the player.
