After the Houston Texans horrific season, Deshaun Watson has reportedly decided to request a trade from the team. The Texans had a 4-12 record and many of the players were unhappy including Watson and JJ Watt, their star DE. The question now becomes where will Watson go?
One possible trade destination for Deshaun is the New York Jets. The Jets currently have the second pick in this year’s upcoming draft, after a 2-14 season. The Jets were lined up to get Trevor Lawrence after starting the season 0-13, but two shocking wins against two teams that were in the playoffs has dropped them to the No. 2 overall pick. Luckily for the Jets, another former Clemson quarterback (Deshaun Watson) is available. If the team was able to acquire him then they would be getting a guy who has already proved that he is a great QB.
The Jets will have the opportunity to draft Justin Fields or Zach Wilson, but who knows if they are ever going to get to Deshaun Watson’s level. Even if either of them do become great, it would take at least a couple of years, while you can get Deshaun Watson now. The team’s current QB Sam Darnold isn’t terrible, but Adam Gase did not help. Since the Jets hired a defensive guy in Robert Saleh to be the next coach of the team, it would make sense to get a proven quarterback and Watson is just that.
The Chicago Bears are another team Deshaun good very well go to. The Bears have QB Mitchell Trubisky, who they drafted instead of Watson in 2017. Trubisky has a winning record in his career, but has struggled mightily these last three years. The Bears clearly do not believe in him and will likely part ways with him this off-season. With that being said, Chicago has a stacked defense led by Khalil Mack. The Bears should really try to acquire Watson and take this team to the next level. Plus, the Bears have RB David Montgomery and WR Allen Robinson if he re-signs.
Another possible destination is the Carolina Panthers. The Panthers current QB is Teddy Bridgewater. Bridgewater had a decent year, but overall seemed to struggle during his first go around in Charlotte. The Panthers could possibly draft a QB since they have a top 10 pick in this year’s upcoming draft. But instead of doing that they can trade for Deshaun Watson. The Texans may very well be intrigued by trading Watson to the Panthers. Bridgewater is still under team control for another two seasons, that would be great for Houston as they would be getting a decent QB while getting additional picks for their star quarterback. Watson will likely like Carolina too. The Panthers have one of the best receiving cores in the league with DJ Moore, Robby Anderson and Curtis Samuel (assuming he re-signs). They also have the best RB in the league with Christian McCaffrey, who is a dual threat RB. Deshaun will have everything he needs in Carolina to succeed and will have a great fit in Joe Brady’s offense.
The Jacksonville Jaguars are also in the mix for Deshaun Watson. They need a QB because Gardner Minshew is clearly not the answer. They also currently have the first pick in this year’s upcoming draft. They just hired their new head coach in Urban Meyer and will have the opportunity to draft Trevor Lawrence. Obviously it is likely that the Jags do draft him, but there are definitely going to be teams trying to trade up to that top spot and if the Jaguars get an offer they can’t refuse they may take it. Then with those picks that Jacksonville gets in return they can trade for Watson, this would mean a much faster rebuild while getting a great face of the franchise type of player.
The final team is the Miami Dolphins. The Dolphins did draft a QB last season in Tua Tagovailoa with the fifth overall pick, but it’s clear that Miami is not sold on him being the QB of the future just yet. There have already been rumors of a possible Tua and picks for Watson trade, making Miami a very possible destination for the star QB. If this was to happen it would be very interesting, two years ago the Dolphins traded Laremy Tunsil to Houston for two first round picks and it is a possibility that the Dolphins trade one of those picks back for Watson. The Dolphins are definitely a team to watch out here in the Watson sweepstakes.
Deshaun Watson is a tremendous top 10 quarterback in the NFL. He wants to be traded and there are going to be a magnitude of teams vying for his services.
