One subject of controversy in the last few weeks in the soccer world, has been whether Liverpool FC should be awarded the Premier League Title.
The simple answer is yes. Liverpool has a 25 point lead on rivals Manchester City, and needs only 2 wins needed to clinch the title. If the ’19-20 season is not able to be finished, Liverpool shall undoubtedly be champions. Also, 6 out of their 9 remaining games are against bottom half sides, which gives another reason on why they would likely be champions anyway.
Many people believe the season should be null and void. Which means the season would start from scratch and no teams would be relegated/promoted, but there is to many factors involved in voiding the season.
Liverpool were on their way to a historic Premier League finish, and they could and most likely would have broken the Premier League points record which stands at 100. Jürgen Klopp’s men have only lost one game this season, which was a 3-0 away loss to Watford, who are fighting relagation.
In France, PSG were awarded the Ligue 1 champions trophy despite only holding a 12 point lead over Marseille. However, there is some hope for a season to be finished with action returning to the Bundesliga. However, some leagues have suspended play for the rest of the season. These leagues include the Dutch Eredivisie and French Ligue 1.
At the end of the day, the decision is up to the FA. It is clear to see that Liverpool would have gone on to be champions regardless. Hopefully if play doesn’t resume, the FA will make the right decision and crown Liverpool champions.
This would be their first league title in Premier League history.
However, the promotion/relegation decision will not be a popular one. Some people will be furious that they worked hard and were going to gain promotion from the Championship, and the others will say they still had time to turn their season around which would be highly unlikely.
