On May 7th, news broke that Earl Thomas was involved in an altercation with his wife. His wife, Nina Thomas, allegedly held a gun to his head after she and two friends caught Earl and his brother, Seth, naked with other woman.
Because of this news, some Ravens fans immediately assumed that Earl would be cut within the next few days. A Ravens spokesperson even said “We became aware of the situation when we read and saw it on the reports late last night and early this morning.” What is even more alarming about this news it that the Ravens weren’t originally told about the incident.
Since the Ray Rice situation, the Ravens have had no tolerance for domestic violence. However, this situation is nothing like Ray Rice’s incident. The Ravens wouldn’t release Earl Thomas because he had an affair. He didn’t beat his wife; he simply wrestled the gun away as he was in fear for his life.
Thomas signed with Baltimore for 4 years, worth 55 million. If the Ravens decided to cut him, it would result in a dead cap amount of $25M for 2020. This would tie the Ravens’ hands in knots.
Although the situation is ugly, Ravens fans should be able to put the release rumors to rest. Unless further details come out against Earl, his job with the Ravens is safe.
