The Detroit Pistons have been mediocre at best in this past decade, only making the playoffs twice.
This year Detroit hit the reset button, trading away former All-Star Andre Drummond, and releasing Reggie Jackson and Markieff Morris.
In order to become a successful team, the Pistons need to build from within, and stop trading away their pieces before they get a chance to develop.
The Pistons drafted players such as Khris Middleton, Spencer Dinwiddie, Andre Drummond, and Stanley Johnson who they traded away before they even got a chance to fully develop.
Middleton and Dinwiddie are both solid players that the Pistons drafted in the second round and got rid of, the Pistons traded Drummond for virtually nothing except for a salary dump, and they didn’t even give Stanley Johnson a chance to improve on the offensive side of the ball.
The Pistons have players on their team that have the potential to become stars, such as Luke Kennard, Svi, Christian Wood, Sekou Doumboya, Thon Maker, and Bruce Brown. These are all players under 25 years old that can make a big impact in the future.
Luke Kennard and Svi are solid shooters and are improving at creating their own shot. Christian Wood is among the most versatile big men in the NBA.
Sekou isn’t even 20 years old and has amazing athleticism. Thon Maker is a lengthy big who can shoot the 3 ball if needed, and Bruce Brown is a fierce player who gives 100% effort whenever he’s on the court and has the potential to become a 20 PPG player.
Since Detroit isn’t a huge spot for free agents, and they don’t have much leverage with other teams, their best bet to get back in contention is to keep their picks and minimize their participation in the trade market.
