With the Milwauke Brewers offensive struggles, they have relied heavily on the bullpen to win them games and they have shown up. When most people think of the Brewers ‘pen they think of the best reliever in baseball Josh Hader who has been absolutely fantastic this year but in the set up role is Devin Williams.
Williams is a rookie who is thriving in his first year in the big leagues. He mainly relies on two pitches a four-seam fastball that clocks in around 97 MPH and his devastating changeup that comes in at around 85 MPH with movement making hitters look silly.
His stats backup how great his stuff has been this season through 12 games that Williams has appeared in he has a 0.87 ERA only allowing 1 run on a homerun earlier in the season. The most impressive stat might be the strikeouts with 25 in just 12 and a third innings pitched.
But what really sets him apart are his advanced stats.
According to baseball savant he is slightly above average in barrel % which is how many times batters barrel up the ball against him. He is well above average in Hard Hit percentage or the amount of times batters have hard contact off of him. He is a top pitcher in the league in 6 different stats xERA, xBA, xSLG%, Strikeout percentage, and Whiff Percentage. If we line his stats up with Josh Hader’s 2019 stats Williams is better in three categories which is still very impressive.
If Williams keeps this up and the Brewers offense can start to heat up the Brew Crew could have another hot September and give the Cubs problems a top the weak NL Central who are four games ahead of Milwaukee. With Devin Williams and Josh Hader in late inning roles leads for the Brewers should be in good hands with two of the best five relievers in baseball.
